COM 115

Welcome

Because the study of public speaking is so fundamental to your future success, we consider COM 115 Fundamentals of Public Speaking to be "The Basic Course" in Communication. Missouri State considers the skills taught in public speaking so essential, that every student at Missouri State is required to successfully complete the course as a requirement for earning an undergraduate degree. The skills emphasized in COM 115 are especially critical in supporting Missouri State's statewide Public Affairs mission. COM 115 teaches students to evaluate information critically, to organize ideas clearly and concisely, to listen well, and to gain comfort, confidence, and professionalism in speaking to large and small groups.

Many of our students enjoy their experiences in COM 115 so much that they choose to take other courses in the department -- whether to pursue more advanced classes in public speaking or to sample classes in small group, interpersonal, or organizational communication. Such classes add to the repertoire of communication skills which can make you more attractive to potential employers as well as enhancing your own personal development. I hope you will give serious consideration to pursuing your study of communication by taking other courses offered in the department.
